A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step
Last year we took an important step on the way to China by participating in the Fifth International Congress of Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA 2010), which was held from November 11–14, 2010, in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. Together with colleagues from our Chinese partner Harve-All, our Market Manager Asia Xu, Ying manned the HAAS booth in Chengdu. She had numerous interesting conversations there, and even brought back a couple of pictures from the congress.

First work, then pleasure, that’s what we say here in Germany. Which is why I now have to get something about food off my chest. So I once read that the best cuisine in the world isn’t French, but Chinese. Well, I can’t really say whether there is a “best cuisine in the world.” But I can tell you that Chinese cuisine (and above all, that in Sichuan) tastes delicious. I particularly like Mapo Doufu, because I really love spicy food. So if you want an excellent recipe for Mapo Doufo, let me know in the comments. I look forward to hearing from you.

„No ned hudla”, sagt die Schwäbische Hausfrau, wenn’s hektisch wird. Auf Hochdeutsch würde man „immer mit der Ruhe“ sagen. Trotzdem, Hektik hin oder her, dass unsere neue Schleifmaschine Multigrind® CA erst jetzt auf unserer Homepage zu sehen ist, ging nicht nur der Schwäbischen Hausfrau zu lang. Aber jetzt ist es soweit, und wir sind gespannt auf Ihre Meinung.
“No ned hudla!”
Swabian housewives like to say “No ned hudla” when things start to get a little hectic. In English, this means something like “hold your horses” or “keep cool.” Either way, although things have been a little hectic, everyone thought it took us a little too long to get our new Multigrind® CA grinding machine up on our Web site – not just the Swabian housewives. But now it’s up, and we are looking forward to hearing what you think.

Auch wenn bei uns in der Fertigung von besinnlicher Stimmung nichts zu spüren ist, unser Weihnachtsbaum steht. Denn lang ist es ja nicht mehr. Wenn Sie also noch keinen Weihnachtsbaum haben, sollten Sie sich allmählich umschauen. Oder Sie fragen unseren Entwicklungschef „Charlie Braun“, ob er Ihnen einen Baum konstruiert, maßgeschneidert sozusagen. Ob das allerdings dieses Jahr noch was wird, kann ich Ihnen echt nicht versprechen! 
Even though the holiday spirit has yet to reach our manufacturing floor, we have already put our Christmas tree up. The day is fast approaching, after all. So if you don’t have a tree yet, it’s time to get out there and start looking for one! Or you can simply ask our Head of Development, “Charlie Braun,” if maybe he would build you a “customized” tree. But one thing I can’t promise you is that he’ll get it done this year!

Passend zur Jahreszeit bringt der Boston Globe online auf seinem Fotoblog einen ganz besonderen Adventskalender. Da werden keine knarrenden Türchen aufgemacht oder Kerzen angezündet. Nein, Alan Taylor vom Boston Globe zeigt uns jeden Tag ein neues wunderbares Foto, das mit dem Hubble Space Telescope gemacht wurde. Mal ein ganz aktuelles Bild, mal ein älteres, aber immer mit einer genauen Bildbeschreibung. Also, wenn Ihnen das Warten auf Weihnachten zu lang wird, klicken Sie auf den Hubble-Adventskalender (kann man übrigens auch als RSS abonnieren). Eine schöne Idee, finde ich.
A Special Advent Calendar
With the holidays fast approaching, the Boston Globe has posted a fitting Advent calendar on its website’s photography blog. There aren’t any little windows to open or candles to light though, instead each day Alan Taylor from the Boston Globe shows us a new, incredible photo taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Sometimes a brand-new image, sometimes an older one, but always with a detailed description of just what we are looking at. So if the run up to Christmas has got you feeling stressed, check out the Hubble Advent calendar (which you can even subscribe to as an RSS feed). I think it’s a nice idea.

We thank you and the Swabian Housewife
Sensible machines are well received, and not just by Swabian housewives. Vernünftige Maschinen kommen an, nicht nur bei der schwäbischen Hausfrau.
A fantastic and interesting week at the trade fair in Stuttgart is now behind us. AMB 2010 was great for us because our new baby, the Multigrind® CA, was extremely well received by visitors to our trade fair stand. And our visitors once again made this a very interesting week for us by giving us a host of technical ideas. We are extremely grateful for these ideas, and we will further analyze them and incorporate them into the development of new HAAS products when the time is right.
Eine gute und interessante Messewoche in Stuttgart liegt hinter uns. Die AMB 2010 war für uns gut, weil unser neues Baby, die Multigrind® CA, von den Besuchern unseres Messestands durchweg positiv aufgenommen wurde. Und die AMB war interessant, weil wir wieder einige technische Anregungen bekommen haben. Anregungen, für die wir uns bei Ihnen bedanken, die wir prüfen und zum richtigen Zeitpunkt in die Entwicklung neuer HAAS-Produkte einfließen lassen werden.

As a medium-sized mechanical engineering company (the so called German Mittelstand), we value constructive criticism, whether positive or negative. So if 100 out of 100 customers are of the opinion that the CA desperately needs an integrated original Italian coffee machine, then our development manager Hans-Dieter “Charlie” Braun will of course give it some serious thought.
Als mittelständischer Maschinenbauer sind wir auf die konstruktive Kritik, sei sie positiv oder negativ, angewiesen. Wenn also 100 von 100 Kunden der Meinung sind, die CA bräuchte dringend eine integrierte original italienische Kaffeemaschine, dann wird unser Entwicklungschef Hans-Dieter „Charlie“ Braun wahrscheinlich ernsthaft über diese Anregung nachdenken.

Swabian Housewife Influences Development Process – Why Not?
Schwäbische Hausfrau in der Entwicklung. Warum nicht?
Speaking of development, I happened to overhear the way in which Mr. Braun explained the workings of the new CA maintenance cabinet to an interested visitor. That is, why all the readout meters are at eye level and all the filling nozzles are at torso level, as well as why the pipes and supply feeds are where they are and not somewhere else. The whole explanation ended with the sentence “Now, the maintenance cabinet is finally as tidy as it should be.”
Apropos Entwicklung: Ich bin auf der Messe zufällig Ohrenzeuge geworden, wie Herr Braun einem Interessenten das Innere des neuen CA-Wartungsschranks erklärt hat. Also, warum sämtliche Ableseinstrumente in Augenhöhe und alle Befüllstutzen in Bauchhöhe sind, und warum die ganzen Leitungen und Zufuhren nun mal so liegen wie sie liegen, und nicht anders. Die ganze Vorführung endete mit dem Satz: „Jetzt ist der Wartungsschrank endlich richtig aufgeräumt.“

Granted, the machine operator now has a much better overview and control of the supply unit, but I did have to stand back and ask myself whether the spirit of the Swabian housewife really is at work in our development process. Because they place great importance on sensible economy and making sure everything is as tidy as it should be. Am I right?
Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass der Maschinenbediener jetzt wirklich die ganze Versorgungseinheit besser im Blick und im Griff hat, frage ich mich, ob in unserer Entwicklung der Geist der schwäbischen Hausfrau am Werk ist? Denn die legt ja bekanntlich großen Wert auf vernünftiges Wirtschaften und darauf, dass alles immer richtig aufgeräumt ist.Richtig?

Ja, ich weiß, wir haben schon mal hier im Schleifblog was zum Thema Triebwerke und Turbinenschaufeln gebloggt, aber ein Bekannter hat mich neulich auf eine interessante Radiosendung zum Thema Flugzeugtriebwerke hingewiesen.
Yes, I know, we’ve blogged about engines and turbine blades before, but a friend recently pointed out an interesting radio program on the subject of aircraft engines.
„Triebwerke am Limit – Forschung für noch bessere Flugzeugturbinen“ hieß die Sendung von Ralf Krauter auf SWR 2 Radio. Thema war, um es mal ganz grob zusammenzufassen, die Forschung an neuen, noch besseren und effizienteren Flugzeugturbinen. Triebwerke von Flugzeugen sind ja hochkomplexe Komponenten und deren Herstellung entsprechend anspruchsvoll.
“Engines at the Limit – Research for Even Better Aircraft Turbines” was the title of the program by Ralf Krauter on the German radio station SWR 2. Roughly summarized, the main topic was research into new, better, and more efficient aircraft turbines. Aircraft engines are very complex components and their manufacture is correspondingly challenging.

Sechseinhalb Tonnen wiegt das Triebwerk eines Airbus A-380, und es besteht aus rund 20.000 Einzelkomponenten. Bei vollem Schub saugt dieses Triebwerk enorme Mengen Luft an, und es strömt jede Menge Kerosin in die Brennkammern. In denen steigt die Temperatur auf mehr als 2.000 Grad Celsius, was wiederum die Turbinenschaufeln zum Glühen bringt. Ohne Kühlsystem würden die Schaufeln im Nu schmelzen.
An Airbus A-380 engine weighs 6.5 (metric) tons and consists of about 20,000 individual parts. At full thrust, this engine sucks in enormous quantities of air and a lot of kerosene flows into the combustion chamber. Here, the temperature rises to more than 2,000 degrees centigrade, which turns the turbine blades into red-hot metal. Without a cooling system, the blades would quickly melt.
Damit die Turbinenschaufeln diese Belastungen aushalten, werden sie aus extrem anspruchsvollen Werkstoffen gefertigt: Titan, Nickel-Super-Legierungen, Inconel oder Wolfram-Molybdän-Legierungen zum Beispiel. Damit diese Bauteile ihren optimalen Wirkungsgrad in der Turbine entfalten, muss alles hundertprozentig stimmen: Oberflächengüte und Maßhaltigkeit. Schleifen ist deshalb in der Regel die erste Wahl bei der Bearbeitung.
So that the blades can withstand this, they are manufactured from extremely formidable materials, such as titanium, nickel superalloys, Inconel, or tungsten-molybdenum alloys. For these components to reach their optimum efficiency in the turbine, everything must be 100% right: from surface quality to dimensional accuracy. Grinding is therefore generally the first choice for machining.

Bisher mussten die Turbinenschaufeln innerhalb des Schleifprozesses zur exakten Messung auf die externe Messmaschine gespannt werden, dann erfolgte die Nachbearbeitung in einer neuen Aufspannung in der Schleifmaschine. Nun haben unsere Ingenieure das integrierte Messen in unseren Schleifmaschinen dahingehend optimiert, dass die bisher unvermeidlichen Auslenkungen des Messtasters mittels eines Kompensationsprogramms berücksichtig werden. Damit erreichen wir beim Messen in der Maschine eine Wiederholgenauigkeit von einigen µm. Und das alles in einer Aufspannung!
Previously, turbine blades had to be removed for exact measurements using the external measuring equipment and then newly clamped in the grinding machine for grinding to continue. Now our engineers have optimized the measuring system integrated into our grinding machines so that the previously unavoidable deflections of the measuring sensor can be accounted for with a compensation program. This way, we can achieve a repeatable precision in the machine of just a few µm with just a single clamping operation!
Am Limit, Teil 2 / At the Limit, Part Two
Nicht ganz so heiß wie im Triebwerk eines Airbus geht es im Motor einer Pitts zu. Was mein Kollege Thomas Bader allerdings in seiner knappen Freizeit mit diesem Flugzeug anstellt, das ist wiederum ziemlich heiß:
It doesn’t get quite as hot in a Pitts engine as it does in an Airbus engine. However, the things that my colleague Thomas Bader gets up to with this aircraft in his limited free time are pretty sizzling:
Übrigens, Thomas nimmt gern Fluggäste mit, und er kann ihnen auch erklären, warum wir bei HAAS der Meinung sind, dass nicht nur über den Wolken, sondern auch beim Schleifen die Freiheit möglichst grenzenlos sein sollte.
By the way, Thomas likes to take passengers along, and he can also explain why we at HAAS think that it is not just above the clouds – but also when grinding – that freedom should be as limitless as possible.
