The Haas grinder bag
Is that the new must-have courier bag? Has Haas given up on grinding machines and grinding software to specialize in fashion? Never fear, we’re still working hard to open up new technological horizons for grinding professionals. In fact, we’ve just developed completely new grinding software featuring a new kind of system architecture. We call it Multigrind® Horizon 1.0 and will be presenting it at this year’s GrindTec.

We’ll be demonstrating our new grinding software live at the GrindTec trade fair in Augsburg from 14 – 17 March 2012 in hall 7, at stand 7001. But if you can’t wait that long to find out what our software is capable of, then simply visit the software page on our webite or download our brochure.

Mécanisme d’Anticythère
L’une des publications scientifiques les plus prestigieuses au monde, Nature, a effectué un sondage sur son blog au sujet de la meilleure vidéo scientifique. Avec la superbe vidéo ci-dessus. On y voit est une reproduction du mécanisme d’Anticythère, également connu sous le nom d‘ordinateur d’Anticythère.
L’appareil à engrenage le plus ancien au monde
Le mécanisme d’Anticythère a été découvert en 1900 devant l’île grecque de Cythère, dans la mer. Cet appareil à engrenage le plus ancien au monde a été construit en l’an 100 avant J.C. Des reconstitutions de l’appareil suggèrent qu’il est une sorte de premier ordinateur analogique. Des scientifiques pensent que les mouvements des corps célestes ont été calculés avec lui. Ce qui est particulièrement passionnant pour moi en tant qu’ingénieur, c’est le fait que cette machine miraculeuse comporte un entraînement différentiel, dont l’invention n’est effectivement apparue qu’au 13ème siècle.
1400 ans sur leur temps
Je dirais que les Grecs anciens étaient en avance de près de 1400 ans sur leur temps en matière de technologie d’entraînement. Chez HAAS, nous ne sommes pas tant en avance dans le développement des rectifieuses, mais nous y travaillons. 
Nous ne savons pas comment ce magnifique engrenage a été fabriqué il y a plus de 2000 ans. Aujourd’hui, on prend pour cela un outil d’engrenage ultra précis. Et comment on produit ou l’on affûte de tels outils sur une Multigrind CA oder CB, nous le savons très bien.

Antikythera Mechanism
One of the world’s most distinguished scientific publications, Nature, conducted a survey on their blog regarding the best scientific video. The remarkable video above was one of the nominees. The video shows a reproduction of the Antikythera mechanism, also known as the Antikythera computer.

The World’s Oldest Geared Device
The Antikythera mechanism was found in the waters off the Greek island of Kythera in the year 1900. The world’s oldest geared device was built close to 100 years B.C. Reconstructions of the mechanism have led to the conclusion that it was something like the first analog computer. Scientists believe that it was used to calculate the movements of celestial bodies. As an engineer, what I find particularly fascinating is the fact that this magical device contains a differential gear, which was supposed to have been invented much later, in the 13th century.
1,400 years ahead of their time
So I guess that when it comes to power transmission, the ancient Greeks were about 1,400 years ahead of their time! At HAAS, we aren’t that far ahead when it comes to developing grinding machines – but we’re working on it. We don’t know how they manufactured these incredible gear teeth more than 2,000 years ago. Today this is done using high-precision tools. But one thing we do know is how to manufacture or sharpen such tools on a Multigrind CA or CB.

Eine der weltweit angesehensten wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, Nature, hat auf ihrem Blog eine Umfrage zum besten wissenschaftlichen Video durchgeführt. Mit dabei das schöne Video oben. Zu sehen ist eine Nachbildung des Mechanismus von Antikythera, auch bekannt als Computer von Antikythera.
Die älteste Zahnradapparatur der Welt
Der Mechanismus von Antikythera wurde im Jahr 1900 vor der griechischen Insel Kythera im Meer gefunden. Gebaut wurde diese älteste Zahnradapparatur der Welt um das Jahr 100 vor Christi Geburt. Rekonstruktionen des Apparates legen den Schluss nahe, dass es sich um eine Art ersten analogen Computer handelt. Wissenschaftler gehen davon aus, dass damit die Bewegungen der Himmelskörper berechnet wurden. Besonders aufregend für mich als Ingenieur ist die Tatsache, dass diese Wundermaschine ein Differentialgetriebe enthält, dessen Erfindung eigentlich erst im 13. Jahrhundert dran gewesen wäre.
Ich würde mal sagen, da waren die alten Griechen in Sachen Getriebetechnik ihrer Zeit um knapp 1400 Jahre voraus! So weit sind wir bei HAAS der Entwicklung in Sachen Schleifmaschinen noch nicht voraus – aber wir arbeiten dran. Wir wissen nicht, wie man diese tolle Verzahnung vor mehr als 2000 Jahren hergestellt hat. Heute nimmt man dazu hoch präzise Verzahnungswerkzeuge. Und wie man solche Werkzeuge auf einer Multigrind CA oder CB herstellt oder nachschärft, das wissen wir ganz genau.

„No ned hudla”, sagt die Schwäbische Hausfrau, wenn’s hektisch wird. Auf Hochdeutsch würde man „immer mit der Ruhe“ sagen. Trotzdem, Hektik hin oder her, dass unsere neue Schleifmaschine Multigrind® CA erst jetzt auf unserer Homepage zu sehen ist, ging nicht nur der Schwäbischen Hausfrau zu lang. Aber jetzt ist es soweit, und wir sind gespannt auf Ihre Meinung.
“No ned hudla!”
Swabian housewives like to say “No ned hudla” when things start to get a little hectic. In English, this means something like “hold your horses” or “keep cool.” Either way, although things have been a little hectic, everyone thought it took us a little too long to get our new Multigrind® CA grinding machine up on our Web site – not just the Swabian housewives. But now it’s up, and we are looking forward to hearing what you think.

Welcome into the HAAS family
Ready for new grinding frontiers: Dirk Wember and David Drechsler.
Motivated and motivating
If you want to develop business in such a demanding market like the US and Canada you need an experienced, motivated and motivating Business Development Manager. I am very happy to have David Drechsler on our team in Warsaw, Indiana. David will be responsible for expanding the sales in current markets served by HAAS including medical equipment, gears, gear-cutting, precision tools and aerospace. He will also spearhead growth into new markets for which the Haas Multigrind® line of grinding centers creates exceptional value. A good example for our innovative drive and engineering spirit is our new Multigrind® CA.
Experienced and always an open ear for his clients
David brings nearly 25 years of uniquely valuable sales and applications experience to our customers in the markets we serve. He also has a strong reputation for integrity, drive and customer service; qualities that are very consistent with our business philosophy. He holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. David and his wife Kim live in Clover, South Carolina: The town with “love” in the middle.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Our English-speaking customers have often told me that although they find our grinding blog (in Germany known as the Schleifblog) a great idea, their knowledge of German is not sufficient to fully understand and enjoy it. So now, especially for you, my English-speaking friends, with much “blood, sweat and tears”, my current post is in a hopefully passable English! Read on…

A few weeks ago I blogged here about the really impressive components our client I.P. Huse produces in Norway with hob grinders manufactured on our Multigrind CB. I have now come upon an interesting website from Daniel Clements, a London based photographer. He shot an aesthetically pleasing photo story about the Rolls-Royce/IP Huse partnership. To me, his series is further proof that the technical products we’re dealing with every day (like gear wheels or hob grinders) are anything but boring. It just depends how we see them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the English saying goes.

Engineering with passion
But beauty, functionality and of course technical perfection are also the result of our attitude towards our work. And we at HAAS are pretty passionate about our work. Some say that Germans are born with that special picky engineering gene. I don’t know about that. I think there are great engineers and inventors in all countries. But yes, if you walk through our production hall, watch our staff and talk to them about engineering, grinding and technical matters, you will feel that special HAAS attitude. Plus: Technology isn’t all we know how to do – we can also barbecue, check out some impressions here.
If a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing it well.
We’d be happy to show you around our premises anytime you’re in the area and exchange opinions and ideas over a Black-Forest beer or two.
