Sushi and spaetzle – how’s that for a combination? An outstanding one, in our opinion. That’s why we’re proud to be able to distribute the products of WAIDA MFG.CO., LTD, Japan’s leading manufacturer of periphery grinding machines, since January 1, 2012. WAIDA, a medium-sized family business headquartered in Takayama in the Gifu prefecture, will return the favor by distributing our Multigrind® grinding machines in Japan and other Asian countries.
No. 1 in Japan 130 employees develop and manufacture this long-established company’s periphery grinding machines, CNC jig grinders and CNC profile grinding machines. Similar to HAAS, WAIDA attaches great importance to personal service and – needless to say – to precision in the micrometer range. WAIDA’s grinding machines are used by all large Japanese carbide tool manufacturers.
Even more complete machining Now that we have access to WAIDA machines, we are in a position to meet all the demands of indexable insert manufacturers – everything from large-scale production to the machining of carbide indexable inserts with highly complex geometries on a small-scale basis. This means that our complete machining is now even more complete.
Two languages, one driving force Now you’re probably wondering how well we speak Japanese here in Trossingen? Well, to be honest, there’s loads of room for improvement. But despite all the language barriers and cultural differences (that offer enrichment potential as well!), there are a couple of things that unite mechanical engineering companies the world over – a passion for technology and that inherent spirit of invention that drives us to ever greater heights.
150 years of Japanese-German friendship
Did you know that last year, 2011, was the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Japanese-German friendship? What a pleasant coincidence that our cooperation with WAIDA came into being exactly 150 years after the signing of the first friendship and trade agreement between Japan and what was at that time Prussia on January 24, 1861. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Japanese Embassy in Germany set up a highly informative website.
Germany marked the end of the anniversary year by holding a Taiko concert – featuring the “Kamotsuna-Mura Taiko” ensemble from the Miyagi prefecture – in Berlin on November 30, 2011. Taiko Music – drums and dance – plays a huge role in Japanese culture.
Since a couple of days, the leading trade fair for metal working – the EMO Hannover – has opened it’s doors. Obviously each exhibitor aims to attract the trade fair’s visitors to its stand using every form of media imaginable. The goal of the whole event, and we don’t need to beat around the bush here, is to have as many good conversations with visitors as possible – in order to ultimately make a sale … whether it’s indexable inserts for metal machining, or in our case, high-tech grinding centers for manufacturing indexable inserts.

Emo means “I buy”
By the way, the little word “emo” comes from the Latin “emere,” which means “to purchase, to win someone over.” Which brings us back to our topic. Everyone wants to sell something at the EMO (Exposition Mondiale de la Machine Outil), including, of course, our colleagues at other grinding machine manufacturers. And to do so, many of them really lay it on thick in their advertising. I recently got the chance to read another ad from one of these grinding machine manufacturers. The ad boasted about complete tool machining. Which sounds interesting at first, if it really were true complete machining. But it isn’t.
Blank in, insert out, that’s what complete machining is all about
When you come to the EMO in Hannover (the HAAS booth is located in Hall 6, Booth F28), we’ll show you the first grinding machine in the world which you can use to completely grind inserts with HAAS precision in a fully automated process with one clamping step. Thanks to the special kinematics of our Multigrind®CA, our designers and software experts achieved a real breakthrough in the production of carbide inserts. This is how easy complete machining is with a HAAS grinding machine:
Step 1: Grinding the periphery
Step 2: Grind the profile
Step 3: Grind the chip surface
Step 4: Remove the finished insert while looking at it in amazement
We’d love to show you all the other things you can do with our grinding software and grinding machines at the EMO in Hanover or at our headquarters in Trossingen, South Germany.
