Free ride home
The picture below shows us Space shuttle Discovery mounted atop a NASA 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft on April 17 near the U.S. Capitol. Discovery spent 365 days in space, orbited the Earth 5,830 timeas and traveled 148,221,675 miles. Discovery will be transfered to the US National Air and Space Museum.

Vor einer Weile hat Thomas Bader hier im Blog mal was zum Thema „Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters“ geschrieben. Was mir neulich auf der EMO passiert ist, passt dazu ganz gut. Charlie, das ist was für Dich:
Sie ist einfach schön
Ein Ehepaar kam auf unseren Messestand, um sich die Multigrind® CA anzuschauen, auf der gerade Turbinenkomponenten geschliffen wurden. Ich ließ die beiden ein paar Minuten in Ruhe, bevor ich mich erkundigte, ob sie vielleicht irgendwelche Fragen hätten oder eine spezielle Aufgabe, die man mit einer HAAS-Schleifmaschine lösen könnte. Darauf antwortete der Mann: „Ach sie ist einfach schön.“ Als seine Frau dies hörte, spielte sie ein bisschen die eifersüchtige Partnerin, die die Zuneigung ihres Mannes mit einer Schleifmaschine teilen muss. Ich sagte ihr, sie solle sich keine Sorgen machen … ihr Mann meine eine andere Art von Schönheit.

It’s beautiful
A man, accompanied by his wife, stopped to admire the Haas Multigrind® CA grinding machine on which we were just demonstrating a turbine component grinding process. After giving the visitor a few minutes to soak it all in, I approached him to ask if he had any questions or was thinking about a particular manufacturing challenge he could solve with the Haas grinder. He only replied: ”It’s beautiful.“ His wife, hearing his remark, half-jokingly showed some jealous body language fearing that the Haas grinder had stolen some of her husband’s affection. I told her not to worry… it is a different kind of beautiful.
An estimated 1.4 million femoral knee implants are produced annually on Haas Multigrind® grinding centers. And we are continually looking for opportunities to improve our capabilities and increase value for our customers. In a recent case, Haas personnel in the U.S. worked to increase demand for our customers’ products.

After completing the Cooper River Bridge Run on April 2 in Charleston SC the Drechsler family, and 40000 other runners are maybe (but hopefully not) 10 km closer to a knee replacement.
What a great and motivating location for a nice 10 km run.

Congratulations and New Joy
The Chinese “Year of the Metal Rabbit” begins on February 3. We’d like to wish all our customers and business partners a happy, healthy, and of course successful new year! They say that in the year of the metal rabbit, it’s easier to earn money and people are more open to compromises and sound arguments during this time. So we’re looking forward to seeing what the new year brings.

It goes without saying that we are really going to push ourselves in the year of the metal rabbit! We want to work constructively with our users (which is another thing that’s supposed to be easier in the year of the metal rabbit) to always develop the best grinding process possible. And to do so, we have the right grinding machines and above all, decades of experience and expertise. For example, thanks to our grinding machines we have been the global leader in the field of knee implants for many years.
A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step
Last year we took an important step on the way to China by participating in the Fifth International Congress of Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA 2010), which was held from November 11–14, 2010, in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. Together with colleagues from our Chinese partner Harve-All, our Market Manager Asia Xu, Ying manned the HAAS booth in Chengdu. She had numerous interesting conversations there, and even brought back a couple of pictures from the congress.
CIMT, Beijing, the Second Step
After receiving so much positive feedback regarding our grinding machines in Chengdu, we decided to participate in the CIMT in Beijing from April 11–16, 2011. This will be our first time at the China International Machine Tool Show. You can find us in Hall E4 at Booth C210. We look forward to seeing you! Mapo Doufu from Sichuan
First work, then pleasure, that’s what we say here in Germany. Which is why I now have to get something about food off my chest. So I once read that the best cuisine in the world isn’t French, but Chinese. Well, I can’t really say whether there is a “best cuisine in the world.” But I can tell you that Chinese cuisine (and above all, that in Sichuan) tastes delicious. I particularly like Mapo Doufu, because I really love spicy food. So if you want an excellent recipe for Mapo Doufo, let me know in the comments. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gleich zwei Mal habe ich in den letzten Tagen gelesen, dass das Gütesiegel „Made in Germany“ out sei (SZ 23.6.2010), bzw. das Markenzeichen „Engineered in Germany“ zunehmend an Bedeutung verliere. (Beilage VDI-Nachrichten Juni 2010). Keine Ahnung, auf welche Produkte sich diese Aussage genau beziehen. Ich kann sie jedenfalls für unsere Schleifmaschinen nicht nachvollziehen. Im Gegenteil!
Not just once, but twice in the past few days I’ve read that the ‘Made in Germany’ seal of approval is “out” (SZ 23.6.2010) or that the importance of the ‘Engineered in Germany’ trademark is on the wane (VDI-Nachrichten, June 2010 supplement). I haven’t a clue which products this claim is supposed to refer to, but I can’t see how it applies to our grinding machines. Just the opposite!
Ausland schätzt German Engineering
Als Maschinenbauer mit einem Exportanteil von deutlich mehr als 50 Prozent arbeite ich ständig mit ausländischen Ingenieuren und Technikern, in den USA, China, Irland oder Frankreich, um nur ein paar Länder zu nennen. Und wissen Sie was? Made in Germany oder Engineered in Germany genießt, so mein Eindruck, im Ausland nach wie vor einen sehr guten Ruf. Allerdings sollten wir alle mehr dafür tun. Also, statt ständig über die Rahmenbedingungen für Mittelständler in Deutschland zu klagen (ja ich weiß, die sind wirklich nicht besonders), sollten wir Ingenieure und Techniker unsere Energie in die Entwicklung neuer Technologien stecken. Und zwar am besten solche, die dem Kunden wirklich etwas nützen und sich rechnen. Für HAAS jedenfalls geht diese Strategie der konsequent am Kundenbedarf ausgerichteten Entwicklung auf.
German engineering enjoys international acclaim
In our capacity as machine manufacturers exporting considerably more than 50 per cent of our products, I work with international engineers and technicians all the time – in the United States, China, Ireland or France, to name just a few countries. And you know what? I get the impression that ‘Made in Germany’ or ‘Engineered in Germany’ still enjoy a very good reputation abroad. However, I feel that we should all do more to promote them. Instead of constantly grumbling about the conditions facing small- to medium-sized companies in Germany (yes, I know they’re really not particularly good), we engineers and technicians should invest our energy in developing new technologies – preferably those that are of some real use to the consumer and also make economic sense. As far as HAAS is concerned, this strategy of resolute customer-oriented development is paying off.
MWP-Award für Multigrind CB
Unsere Kunden sind mit der Leistung unserer Maschinen sehr zufrieden; und jetzt haben wir auch noch vor ein paar Tagen den britischen MWP-Award 2010 für unsere Multigrind CB bekommen. Der MWP-Award ist für Ingenieure so was wie der „Oscar“ für die Filmbranche oder der „Grammy“ für Musiker. Zusammen mit unserem englischen Partner Chris Boraston von Dorman Machine Tools sind wir stolz auf die Auszeichnung „Best Grinding & Finishing Machine“ und, wir wollten es kaum glauben, auf den Gesamtsieg in allen Kategorien, den „Grand Prix“. Also, da sage noch einer, Engineered in Germany verliert an Bedeutung. Oder sollte man ab jetzt lieber sagen „Engineered in Trossingen“?.
MWP Award for Multigrind CB
Our customers are highly satisfied with the performance of our machines; what’s more, just a few days ago we even won the British MWP Award 2010 for our Multigrind CB. In the world of engineering, the MWP Award is something like an ‘Oscar’ for the film industry or a ‘Grammy’ for musicians. In conjunction with our English partner Chris Boraston of Dorman Machine Tools, we are proud of the accolade ‘Best grinding and finishing machine’ and, although we can hardly believe it ourselves, of being voted the outright winner across all categories – the ‘Grand Prix’, so to speak. Who says ‘Engineered in Germany’ is losing its appeal? Or perhaps it should now be changed to ‘Engineered in Trossingen’?
And the MWP Grand Prix goes to... Preisverleihung in Birmingham. And the MWP Grand Prix goes to ... the awards ceremony in Birmingham.
Harter Wettbewerb, klare Kriterien
Ganz besonders beeindruckt waren die Mitglieder der MWP-Jury von der Tatsache, dass der Anwender auf einer Multigrind CB Bauteile mit sehr komplexen Geometrien (Turbinenschaufeln aus Titanlegierungen oder Kniegelenksimplantate) vom Rohling bis zum fertigen Bauteil in nur einer Aufspannung schleifen kann. Mit im Wettbewerb um die MWP-Awards waren übrigens Maschinenbauer wie DMG, Vollmer, Blohm, Mori Seiki, Mazak und Okuma, um nur ein paar zu nennen. Ein ganz erlesenes Feld, das unsere CB da auf die Plätze verwiesen hat. In der Jury saßen durch die Bank hochkarätige Experten aus Forschung, Lehre und Industrie. Die Kriterien nach denen die Maschinen bewertet wurden lauteten unter anderem: Innovation, einfache Implementierung, Ersatz alter Technologien, höhere Produktivität, Kostenreduktion, Zuverlässigkeit, Wartungsfreundlichkeit, Nachhaltigkeit, Ressourcenschonung, Genialität und nicht zuletzt wurde verlangt, dass die Maschine neue technologische Standards setzt.
Strong competition, clear criteria
The MWP jury was particularly impressed by the fact that the Multigrind CB can be used to grind components with highly complex geometries (turbine blades made of titanium alloys or knee-joint replacements) from the blank to the finished part in a single operation. Incidentally, other contestants for the MWP Awards included such machine manufacturers as DMG, Vollmer, Blohm, Mori Seiki, Mazak and Okuma, to name just a few. That’s quite an elite line-up that our CB left behind. Across the board, the jury consisted of high-calibre specialists from the fields of research, teaching and industry. The judging of the machines was based on the following criteria: innovation, ease of operation, replacement of old technologies, increased productivity, reduced costs, dependability, low maintenance, sustainability, conservation of resources and technical brilliance, among others. Last but not least, the machine also had to set new technological standards.

Nix g’sagt isch au g’lobt.
Wir Schwaben haben es ja von Natur aus nicht so mit dem Loben. „Nix g’sagt isch au g’lobt“, sagt man bei uns. Auf gut Hochdeutsch: Nichts gesagt ist auch gelobt. Deshalb freuen wir uns, dass die britische MWP-Jury das Loben für uns übernommen und die Qualität und Leistungsfähigkeit unserer Multigrind CB ausgezeichnet hat.
Wussten Sie eigentlich, dass das Siegel „Made in Germany“ im England des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts als „Warnsiegel“ eingeführt wurde? Damit sollten einheimische englische Produkte vor vermeintlich minderwertigen Nachahmerprodukten aus dem Ausland geschützt werden. Im ersten Weltkrieg sollte diese Kennzeichnung helfen, Produkte des Kriegsgegners zu boykottieren. Ich bin echt froh, dass wir diese Zeiten hinter uns haben. Da messen wir uns doch viel lieber im technologischen Wettbewerb oder beim Fußball. Aber das ist jetzt eine ganz andere Geschichte…
Not saying anything is also a form of praise
We Swabians are not naturally inclined to be too lavish with our praise. There’s a local saying ‘Nix g’sagt isch au g’lobt’, which amounts to ‘Not saying anything is also a form of praise’. So we’re very pleased that the British MWP judges did the praising for us and awarded our Multigrind CB the prize for outstanding quality and performance. By the way, did you know that the ‘Made in Germany’ seal was first introduced in England as a warning at the end of the 19th century? The aim was to protect indigenous British products against supposedly inferior replicas from abroad. During World War I, this classification was intended to help boycott any items manufactured by the enemy. I’m really glad that these days are over. It’s far better to compete against each other in the field of technology or on the football pitch. But that’s a different story altogether …

P.S. Auf Youtube habe ich einen witzigen Werbefilm gefunden, der mit dem Image von uns deutschen Ingenieuren spielt. PS I found an amusing promotional clip on YouTube that parodies the image of us German engineers.
Als leidenschaftlicher Hobbypilot, mit leider viel zu wenig Zeit, kann ich sehr gut nachempfinden, was Andreas Späth von der Süddeutschen als Copilot im Kunstflieger erlebt hat, das mit der Spucktüte mal ausgenommen. Die Kunstfliegerei bringt nämlich Mann (oder Frau) und Material bisweilen an die Grenzen der Belastbarkeit. Als Maschinenbauer fasziniert mich natürlich nicht nur das Fliegen selbst, sondern auch die technische Materialfrage sehr. Schließlich sind die physikalischen Belastungen, die zum Beispiel ein Turbinenblatt in einem Passagierjet aushalten muss, enorm: Umgebungstemperatur rund 1.200 ° und dazu jede Menge aggressive Stäube, die mit Hochgeschwindigkeit auf das Blatt treffen. Wie man solche Bauteile aus besonders schwer zerspanbaren Werkstoffen (Super Alloys, Inconel, Titan usw) wirtschaftlich und präzise schleifen kann, damit beschäftigen wir uns bei HAAS seit geraumer Zeit. Und live zeigen wir das jetzt zum ersten Mal auf der Paris Air Show 2009. Hier trifft sich einfach alles, was in der Luftfahrtindustrie Rang und Namen hat. Die Hersteller von Flugzeugen und Helikoptern, die Zulieferer wie HAAS und natürlich jede Menge Menschen wie ich, für die das Fliegen immer noch die vielleicht schönste Nebensache der Welt ist.
